Hi jim Bobby here, I believe the answer is two 1990 and 1998. These games were great performances and the England team were well beaten by the better teams. However I don't believe this world cup will make it 3, as the England team performances have been anything but great. Ecuador will provide a tense match, and England should only dismiss them at their Peril.!!

I find it fascinating that certain peeps say that Ingerland shouldn't have gone out on penalties in previous World Cups. "Should be a golden goal" or something else. It's the same for both teams ! If you can't score with a free shot from 12 yards then you shouldn't be playing. And Ingerland can win shoot-outs (1996 v. Spain). Check your history or are you a glory-hunter who only supports Ingerland when they play at the World Cup ?

Pog ma thion !

Toooo many to count I guess. We are so disappointing on penalties I can never watch them its too heart breaking and stressful. I think our guys need to practice abit more, then again I can see the pressure could be a factor for us going out so many times. But at the end of the day thats what their big wages are for. I hope we do so well and get to the final in the world cup.

I think it was twice - though somehow it seems like many more times.

Every time it happens it is riveting to watch - and I'm not even really a football fan!

But maybe I am becoming one - will check out the website. World cup football is like poetry in motion.

Twice? I can only recall 1990 vs Germany in the semi-final and 1998 vs Argentina.
