If her periods are irregular you will either need to buy the over the counter ovulation kit or you could try the old fashioned way.

This is what I did. Get an inexpensive digital thermometer and set it next to the bed. When your wife wakes, right before sitting up, she needs to take her temperature. It should be very close to the same temperature every day until she begins ovulating. When she begins ovulating, her temperature should go up 2 or 3 degrees and that should last about 3 days. That is your window of opportunity.

Remember that drinking alcohol the night before will change her temperature.

Good Luck

I would recommend that you (your wife) get "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" by Toni Weschler!! It is a VERY informative book and will make it SOOO much easier to tell when your wife ovulates! The problem with just taking your temperature is that it can only tell you when you have ALREADY ovulated, not when you are about to ovulate!! The problem with Ovulation Prediction Kits or Fertility Monitors is that they can sometimes be wrong! If you are on track to ovulate a certain day and then something happens that gets you really stressed or is something traumatic, then your ovulation will be put off for a little while!! Even though you are having all the symptoms of ovulation and the fertility monitor says you're fixing to...it doesn't necessarily mean that you will ovulate on the day that you think you will! The book really goes into detail about ALL the aspects of your cycle and is so helpful!! And with your wife having irregular periods, it probably is very frustrating not knowing exactly when to time her ovulation date!! So please get this book! If you do, before you know it, your wife will probably find a pattern in her cycle and will be able to better predict when she ovulates! I really hope this helps!! Good luck with trying to conceive and I hope everything works out for you...

I also have irregular periods. I had no idea for so long that I was not ovulating normal and only 5 times a year. Thats a hit or miss! The doctor told me it could take years of trying w/o meds. I am on clomid, it is a drug that tricks the brain into ovulating (by producting more hormones). This has worked and now my periods are regular and I am ovulating every month!

Some extra stuff on this subject.

Start taking prenatal vitamins now. Try to limit your coffee to < 2 cups and limit sodas too...of course water is best. I read somewhere that caffeine can contribute to miscarriages early in pregancy. He should limit tobacco and alcohol..and if he'll do it have him take men's vitamins - I think Folic Acid is important? Not sure... Have intercourse every other day. You can start taking ovulation tests after day 12 of your period. (You have to read the box, I could be wrong). Also, stay in bed for 30-45 minutes after intercourse. You are usually likely to get pregnant around day 14 of your cycle. Sorry so long...I hope this is helpful.

Ok, for a start what do you mean by irregular? Mine can be anything but we've never had trouble conceiving so not due to lack of ovulation.....what I would say is the one baby we have conciously "tried for" took 11 months to be conceived. That included taking temps, using kits that measured the LH etc, the other 3 just happened when we had sex because we wanted to! One was conceived only 3 days after my period had finshed, even though my periods were 12 weeks apart. My advice? Stop NEEDING a baby, stop trying and worrying, have sex because it's fun-particularly when SHE wants to, its her bodys way of telling her she's fertile. If you still don't conceive when you have taken the stress out of the situation then you need to see the dr.

The usual ways of calculating your wifes ovulation date do not work when the monthly cycle is irregular mine ranges from 3 weeks to 12 weeks never the same length twice.
There are two options to find out the most likely times of ovulation one is to buy an ovulation predictor kit which your wife can use to find out when she is ovulating, it costs around £50 u.k.
The other way is with the help of a fertility doctor who can find out when your wife ovulates exactly and also give medical assistance to make the cycle more regular and sort out any other hidden problems.

If her cycles are irregular, its impossible to know for sure exactly when she'll ovulate each month. She'd do best to purchase an ovulation predictor kit to assist her with knowing when she's most fertile.

She can also chart her temperatures. She can use this website to learn how. http://www.webwomb.com/basal_body_temp.htm

Good luck and have lots of fun trying ;-)

See if your doc can run some tests if thats to much try using those ovulation kits that you can find at the drug store. I had a similar problem and when we just did it all the time like every other day we got pregnant in three months.

Sometimes, an irregular period can mean that ovulation is no occuring each cycle, particularly if her periods are over 35 days apart. My advice if for your wife to see her ob/gyn. They can help her determine whether or not she is ovulating. This happened to me, do my doctor and I decided that I would take Clomid to stimulate my body to ovulate. We were pregnant after my second month of taking Clomid.
However, every person and their body is different. I strongly suggest speaking to a physician. If your wife's ob/gyn cannot help, he or she can refer you to a specialist who can.
Good luck!

The thing you need to get is Clearblue Easy Fertility Monitor...they are expensive(the monitor is 199 and sticks are like 50) but I got pregnant after a year of trying within a month by using that and taking Fertilaid. Plus the fertilaid increased my sex drive! You can find the monitors on Ebay cheeper also.
