First 2 answers are good clues. A bird, any variety, is capable of eating a large percentage,,,weight wise,,, over its own body weight. Consider the energy it takes to "fly"
They are also opportunists, and what happens to be most readily available, with little effort is what they will eat.
I'll assume they are also doing you a service, whether its gathering and disposing of nuts/seeds,,,or insects.
Enjoy the show.

hi
i hope that i can help u with your question
i want you to know that birds eat for calories this mean that they eat to satisfy their body needs of energy till it is met
and there is experiments done and show that when energy increase in feed by 1% the feed intake will reduce by .5%
and you r right that eating reduce in summer due to heat stress
and if u want solutions for making birds eat more in heat stress u can email me and i will help u(this from nutritional point of view)
about guzzling down the nuts and pecking this is an exploratory activity of birds to dicover the world around them(this from behavioural point of view)

They are feeding their little babies who are very loud right now. We go through a bag of thistle seed a week for the goldfinches right now. We are also blessed to see the occasional shy bluebird every morning. The goldfinches are my husband's favorite. They particularly like the bag feeder.

colder weather, mating and the unpredictability of the genearl weather in the uk at the moment probably has an impact. I haven't seen that many insects at all so far this year.
