This thought depresses me. When you think about it, there's a very slim chance that you will be remembered for more than a couple of generations. When most people die they are remembered by a small group of people. So what's the point in living if you will never acheive immortality through something you do, say or write while alive?

The depressing part of it is after we're gone and everyone we interacted with is gone, the memory of us will be gone. It's just kind of depressing.

I'm not saying that I want to change the world and I certainly didn't mean to sound arrogant. I'm just questioning the point of it all if in a long enough time your entire existance is completely insignificant.

I am listening.
Your concerns are based on externalities many of which are beyond your ability to shape, change, or control.
The point of living begins from the personal point of view and broadens as you mature. Learning about yourself and developing your potentials will enable you to help others if that is your desire and it will help you get the recognition you desire. Work from the inside out! Someday you will grow beyond that need to play to the crowds and you will find fulfillment in just being yourself doing the best you can to enjoy living your life while learning, laughing, and loving as much as you can. The moments of existential despair will pass if you get busy and do your duties; and, they will by contrast make your moments of existential joy all the more meaningful and satisfying. TWH

Wow, and I thought I was arrogant...
Why do you want to be remembered? Immortality? Is that the driving motivation for your actions?
Don't get me wrong, I am no angel when it comes to wanting recognition. After 20 plus years, 50 web sites, 30,000 web pages and a million visitors a year, I would at least like to hope I've made an impression. But I also get depressed and think what is the point?
The point is you are not the only one, nor am I. The point is because "to believe one person can change the world is supremely arrogant, but not to try is supremely ignorant"...

To experience life to its fullest potential no matter how short, or long, or mortal it maybe. To have fun through the process of never ending learning, because people never stop learning! The point is to be, and make the most out of it. Just be creative.
Live like you’re immortal or like you’ll die tomorrow (which ever one works best for you), so you can achieve stuff to make better days for the future, and so you will not let fear hold you back from taking reasonable risks that you may regret not following through on later.
P.S.
I also fully agree with "The Architect"

One person may be nothing in the grand scheme of things, but to someone out there YOU are the world!
The whole point of living is to give as much as you take. If you do things to be kind rather than to thought of as kind then you will find satisfaction is it's own reward.
Don't do something just so you can be remembered. Either do it because it's the right thing to do, or don't do it at all.

Try to help as many people as you can. Even if your name is not on the lips of people for tha ages, your actions ripple out like that proverbial pebble in the still pond. They ripple out, chain reactionstyle, and your deeds and spirit will live on in immeasurable ways.
Regret is an exercise in futility. Getting depressed helps nobody.

There would be no point in living if all the effort and suffering ultimately resulted in nothing. What you desire is that which is meaningful and lasting. Do you think that knowledge is possible in this area? If so please e-mail for further discussion.

You can make an eternal difference in this world. First, you must know that you are going to Heaven when you die and then you can tell others how and they will be in Heaven forever. To find out how you can go before you start telling others, go to this helpful site that I found:

So you won't live for ever. You can still improve the lives of those around you, and unless you do something really bad you won't be infamous for ever.
