Women can be color blind, but it takes a double dose of the gene for this to happen. Color blindness may be carried on the x chromosome. As in hemophilia, women are protected because they have two X chromosomes; a normal gene on one chromosome can often make up for a defective gene on the other.) Men have an x and a y chromosome. If a man carries the gene on the x chromosome, it will exhibit itself as colorblindness. A woman on the other hand would have to have a gene on each x chromosome in order to exhibit the colorblindness. This is an x linked recessive disorder.
Just an interesting side note; the royal family has a greater instance of hemophilia A because of the inbreeding that took place centuries ago (to attempt to keep the ROYALness in the family). When you interbreed, you take those dormant little recessive genes in a family and you have many of those same recessive genes coming together and then you have expression of weird things that you don't normally see in a population. That's why consanguineous marriages are outlawed in many states because the offspring can have some very strange or deadly gene expressions.

they can although it is rare , it is an x linked trait from what i remember and since males get the x gene from their mothers if they are carriers of the trait then it will be passed down to the son .but the way the females get it the father has to have the trait and the mother has to be a carrier. (at least thats how i learned it , im not 100% sure)

they can be its just rare. the gene is NOT on the Y it is on the X but women have 2 X's so if one is messed up the other makes up for it. a girl must have both screwed up genes to be colorblind.

Because the color-blindess gene is in the Y chromosome.
