Well, if you have a COSTCO card from the USA, you can use it at any of the COSTCO locations here in Japan to buy 'American style toothpaste and deodorant'. (In my case it's the best source.) You can see all the Japan locations here at this site:
http://www.costco.co.jp/eng/whs_860.htm
Good luck and I hope you find everything you need!
*The Segami and Matsumoto Kiyoshi drug stores where I live carry Vicks, Tylenol, Aqua Fresh toothpaste, Speed stick, -Japanese products, not imported and some US Freeman products.

There is a place called American Pharmacy. I know there is one in Tachikawa train station, but I don't know about elsewhere in Japan. They have a few American things and a few European things. Also, if you have a friend on the Yokota Air Base, they can get those things for you at the Commissary. Otherwise check online.

Sony Plaza shops tend to carry a lot of western toiletries, but the prices can be a bit higher than home. For a more economical route, Tokyo has several "Imported" grocery stores scattered around the city, they *sometimes* carry simple hygeine items...also, feel free to try the local equivalents, usually a lot cheaper.

You shouldn't have much trouble finding toothpaste like AquaFresh and Colgate and so on.
Deodorant will be a taller order. Stock up before you leave if you can.
I lived over there for six years ...
