So when you are masturbating, you are playing with your sexual organs. This is a sexual activity and thus yes, it can be called sex. Granted it is not sexual intercourse but it is a sexual act in some form.
The word "virginity" has a strong image of "abstinence." You may decide you had sex too soon or rethink your decision to be sexually active. Becoming a second-generation virgin is one way to strongly state to others and to yourself that you have decided to abstain from sex.

virginity is the plural for virgin it means when someone has never had sexual intercourse before.
if you masturbate you are still a virgin unless you have had penetrative sex which is when a penis goes into a vagina and its very different.
if somebody has had penetrative sex that means they are not a virgin.
if somebody masturbates but has not had penetrative sex they are still a virgin.
