Yeah, it has lots of nicknames. The one you have there is actually "yuppie flu" because for a while people thought that only young, upwardly mobile professionals were getting it. Ignore the nicknames, they tell you nothing.

Not that the real name is much better. "Myalgic Encephalomyelitis" - a proper doctor might know the correct spelling. That basically means "some kind of long term bad thing that's kinda hooked up to the central nervous system, or maybe not, but we're really not sure what it is". The other name is Chronic Fatigue Syndrome - that's just basically a description of what it does.

My dad and some friends have had it. All of the people I've known with it HAVE recovered completely, though some have taken a long time.

The key for you is, I'm guessing, understanding the condition yourself so that you can educate those around you. Cos they WILL need education. First port of call is probably to google for a support group in your area. Or your doc will probably know one right away.

You will also get information about theories of what causes it. Last I heard there was no concensus about that. BEWARE of "snake-oil" - there will be lots of people trying to persuade you that they have the cure, ranging from new age dreamers to evangelicals even to perhaps mainstream medicine. Try some of them but be in no rush to do so - do it when you're good and ready. What you will now have plenty of - is time.

This is Myalgic Encephalomyelitis. There is controversy about the nature of this condition but it is also referred to as chronic fatigue syndrome or Post-viral fatigue syndrome by some. ME is not the same as fatigue syndrome or chronic fatigue. Here is an information leaflet

Quite often it follows a viral infection

recognised condition know as fibromyalgia which is very debilitating with joint pain, chronic fatigue, and general feelings of depression caused by virus, unknown, suggest read book written by Dr Michael C. Kelly - Fibromyalgia You and M.E. (Consultant Rheumatologist) published by Blackwater Press - very informative and written in layman's terms. Condition can be caused by prolonged stress and affect any age.

You mean "Yuppie Flu"? It is thought by some to be a 'hangover' from an infection by the Epstein-Barr virus that is present during glandular fever. My brother developed it after his and took him 6 months to shake off the EB traces.
