Coach, isn't the rule that "Only winning and winners matter!" taken to the extreme, is the reason why so many people no longer feel honor bound to play fair by the rules?

Remember this question has been posed in the Philosophy Category and it addresses concern beyond competitive sports. ( which in my opinion for discussion elsewhere has lost its value as a vehicle for building a better society on true virtues and merit.

If one believes or places value on such a statement YES that is what matters and any attempt which fails doesnt mean anything and is pointless, doesn't matter etc etc etc.
Personally I feel that anyone who would believe such crap has far more issues they should be concerned with than winning something.
AND thinking in such a way, they automatically place themselves (and anyone foolish enough to follow) directly and firmly in the LOST catagory! LOL (in more ways than one)!

I have been a coach at many levels and if your not there to win-go home. Its attitudes like"its just a game" and "Its for fun" that foster intimidation and problems as the child grows older.
There are places and times for fun but if you are playing organized sports-you should always have winning as the basis for being there
Of course any/all attempts to win are not good such as illegal behavior, steroids etc. it should be played fairly , by the rules

It means not settling for whats left that all.And that in itself is a positive thing.Winning means coming in first. And coming in first is important. When you sit at a restaurant don't you want to be seated first.Or when at a concert don't you want to be the first let in.When in traffic don't you wish you were in front and not behind someone. When at the table do you want leftovers or whats served first. Point all these athletes are making is that being first is what I want .Anything else would be leftovers. But then again some people like left overs.Winners don't.

No, it means that any and all effort should be geared toward winning. This includes putting aside ideas of fair play. If you scored a goal with your handand and didn't get caught (like Maradona in the '86 world cup), keep your yapper shut and take the win.

That's the way it is to some people, it's a pride thing. I used to be like that, still am in a way, but i have gotten better at not caring so much whether i win or lose.

Its not whether you win or lose its how you play the game. Winning at any cost, you can make a lot of enemies, and in the end you are the loser.

what we should be concerned with in regards to "winning"
From quiet homes and first beginning,
Out to the undiscovered ends,
There's nothing worth the wear of winning,
But laughter and the love of friends.

It just means that the person who made that statement has forgotten that we play games for fun, not necessarily to win.

There is no such thing as failure. We just expand our learning curve. Our spirit becomes enlightened. We never fail. We are mind , body and spirit. We are here just a short time. Hell is failure. That fact must be chosen.
