Untreated hyperthyroid will make you very ill, and affects your metabolism causing, usually, weight loss, diarrhoea and many other things, it basically speeds up your bodys' reaction in all areas. In years gone by it was often diagnosed as a mental illness. While not treating it may not kill you, you will be ill all the time, and your quality of life will be severely diminished. Treatment usually starts with drugs to slow down the activity of the thyroid gland, if this is not sucessful, and it isn't in many cases, then treatment with radioactive iodine is used, this destroys the thyroid tissue, and the subsequent underactivity is treated by synthetic thyroid hormone. The treatment is not dangerous to the patient in any way despite the horror conotations every one has about radioactivity, the iodine given is attratcted only to the thyroid gland and doesn't affect any other part of the body. It is much easier to treat an underactive thyroid gland then an overactive one, so making the person hypothyroid is the treatment of choice. You will have to take the thyroid hormone very day for the rest of your life, and have it's levels monitored regularly.

I was diagnosed with an overactive thyroid in Sept 2007. After being given medication (propothiourocil) which actually made by low white blood count worse, I was taken off that & advised to have radioactive iodine treatment. I was recommended to have this at that time because if I didn't, and my blood count dropped further, then I would be unable to have it later because it could affect my heart & surgery, though the more risky option, would become my only option. So reluctantly I went for the radioactive iodine treatment. Basically what it entailed was swallowing a large, bullet-shaped pill (horse pill, I called it!) which then attacks the thyroid & kills some of it off. It meant though that I had to have time off work ( & I had recently started a new job!) because I was radioactive for 19 days; for the first 5 days I could not be within 2 metres (approx 6 feet) of anyone for more than 1 hour per day, & for a further 14 days I could not be within 2 metres (approx 6 feet) of children, pregnant women or women of child-bearing age for more than 1 hour per day. Having a husband & 2 primary school-aged children, this was hard on all of us! I also was extremely tired after the treatment, particularly for the first few days, not wanting to do anything but sleep! I also had to take extra care over personal hygeine - all bodily fluids were radioactive, so it was necessary to flush the toilet twice after each use. In August 2007 blood tests showed that my thyroid was now underactive (8/10 people end up this way after the treatment) & so I was prescribed Levothyroxine, to increase my thyroxin level. I have been told that I will have to take this ( 1 tablet a day) for the rest of my life, but at least I'm now entitled to free prescriptions!

Generally depression is associated with an underactive thyroid, not an overactive one.
Yes, an untreated hyperthyroidism CAN kill you, however in an otherwise fit and well youngish person it would be very rare to happen. The excess hormone produced speeds up the heart rate and in some cases causes atrial fibrillation, a heart arrhythmia. Atrial fibrillation predisposes to blood clots forming in the heart, and these can then break off and embolise to the brain causing a stroke.

Since the thyroid gland is so involved in so many chemical systems in your body (glucose metabolism, respiratory rate, etc), having your thyroid hormones out of whack is dangerous. I've actually seen someone die because he refused to take his thyroxin. Over time, his body systems were affected and he died in our emergency room. There was nothing that could be done because he had waited so long. Too bad because thyroid problems are usually fixable.

Thyroid disease is one of the most common health problems we face today. From a practical standpoint, there are many ways to approach this issue. Learn here https://tr.im/KwtRF
Hypothyroidism, or underactive thyroid, is a very common problem, and there are many reasons for this, including drinking chlorinated and fluoridated water, and eating brominated flour.
Chlorine, fluoride, and bromine are all in the same family as iodine, and can displace iodine in your thyroid gland.
Secondly, many people simply aren't getting enough iodine in their diet to begin with. The amount you get from iodized salt is just barely enough to prevent you from getting a goiter.
