I have found out that most of these poem contest and also photograph ones are cons. They make their money by putting everyons pic in the book and you pay big time. I bough it hook line and sinker. I was thrilled that I was in the finals. And when I got a letter saying that although I did well.someone else won. They said that my work would be in coffee table book. I was thrilled, so I sent of close to $75 for a book. I was thrilled until I realized that most of the work wasn't even amitureish. It was like written poems by grade schoolers. There was a rare good work, but by the book it was clear that everyong that sent in work was published. It is a scam. If the book was filled with quality work it wuld of been great. I took my $75 book and tossed it oiut

As far as the 18,000 word story, I would look for contests accepting novellas, as this is going to be longer than a short story and shorter than a novel. I hope this helps.
