Because there is always that hope that you will change your mind and because they don't want to lose your business. Every customer equals money. A customer lost is revenue lost. If they can please you by giving you a free month and making you stay with AOL then that is a customer saved, and a compalint thrown out the window. Nobody wants the customer to tell others that AOL is bad because they won't use it either and AOL won't be making a profit.

My opinion cooley_54 would be they don't want to loose a customer like they always are. Also in my opinion where I live, AOL sucks! And, you know it doesn't help that I live in Okeechobee, Florida in the middle of no-where. I think really, if you want this question answered you should ask AOL. And, from now on when you try to cancel anything over the phone or anything like that make it short, sweet, not rude, but stern enough to where they know you mean business.

You're not the only one who's frustrated because of that. But probably because they don't want to lose customers and money. I had a friend who wanted to cancel an account and she went there to cancel it and in the end it took them a month to do the actual cancelling and that was only after she went to request them to cancel it for the second time.
If only it was as easy as opening the account when it comes to closing it life would be moonlight and roses, don't you agree? I'm sure you do.

AOL has a reputation for that. They make it almost impossible to quit.
Eventually they are going to have a class action lawsuit over that.
As the Internet grew AOL did not. Now they are losing customers by the hundreds of thousands and are starting to squirm. Their solution is to hide under a rock so no one can find them to quit.

My guess is, they are programmed that way. Perhaps you (nicely) can tell them that you also are recording the conversation for quality control purposes, and that this phone call is your official notice of cancellation of service.

They want to make the process as irritating as possible so that you would rather continuing paying them than attempting to cancel.

The only way I found to quit was to block charges from them on my credit card, then change my credit card number. Those people do not take no for an answer.
