On most turtles, the bottom shell in indented in a male turtle and mostly flat on a female. It's indented on the male because of mating.

I've previously read that a male tortoise and turtle's nails and tails are longer than females, bit hard to notice if you dont have a female tortoise around though. My vet cant tell what my turtle is yet, the size of your tortoise could depend on whether or not you know for awhile. My mate has a tortoise how is about 6 inches and she still doesnt know what gender it is.

The answers you've been told about the underside of the turtle if its indented is a male is true, but there is another way and that is on certain species the tail is noticably larger on a male. Try finding your species on Yahoo search there should be enough information to answer your question.

Depending on the tortoise that you have the sexing can be different however the most defining factor of male vs. female in tortoises mainly comes down to the length of the tail. Males have longer tails that will curve to the side and females have short stubby tails.

Two different species but the tails looks pretty much the same on makes and females of both species. Sexing tortoises however must wait until they are at least 4-6 inches in length depending on the species.

Both my tortoises have indented undersides but Big Ben has long tail with horny bit on end. Little Len has short tail. I have been told that both are males. Ben mounts Len, doesn't matter which end! I think Ben is homosexual!

A female has a completely flat bottom underside to her shell, and a male's has a bowl shape, so that whe they are mating, the bottom of his shell fits over the top of hers.
