The movie is called " The Shining" by Stephen King.
Most of the Ghostly apparitions that were filmed in the
movie, actually happened to Stephen King. (ie. the red
ball in the hall way, the 2 girls (which were actually a
boy and girl) and of course the ballroom scene.). This
actual hotel located in Colorado was being closed down
(probably for the unholly acts going on) and Stephen King
and his wife stayed in the hotel the final night of its closing.
The were the only guests in the house (other than many
sightings of the apperations). Stephen Kings first encounter
was with a maid (ghost) that actually unpacked his bags for
him when his wife and him left the room to "check out" the
hotel, they returned to find all there suitcases unpacked and
put away in the dresser drawers.
The opening scene is looking west down Saint Mary's Lake, Glacier NP, on the Road to the Sun. There is an Ansel Adams photograph taken from exactly the same location.

Stanley Kubricks "The Shining", based on a novel by Stephen King. It was pretty darn creepy if you ask me, especially the part with those twin girls.

You probably mean 'The Shining', though he was a crazy novelist in 'As Good as it Gets' as well (and it was a much better film).
