You need to make sure that your motherboard has a compatible socket with the new processor that you will install or else buy a new motherboard as well.

Ok. The processor's speed is the single biggest factor in computer speed. So yes, p4 is faster than p3, becuase they never made any really fast p3's. RAM determines how much memory you have. If you don't have enough RAM, you have to use the Pagefile, which is like ram on the Hard Drive. The hard drive is increadably slow (this is it's nature-nothing can be done about this) and so you end up with wasted time.
If you have a P3 with a small amount of memory, what you really need is a faster processor with 512MB of memory. P4 or AMD 64 will do.

P4 is faster, as long as the Ghz listed is more. The RAM also plays a large part so when you do upgrade, do your RAM too.
You need to see what P4 processors are compatible with your current Motherboard. Then choose one of those. Search your computer type and model if no changes have been done to find out what motherboard you have. Or go to device manager on your comp.

Yes Pentium 4 is faster than Pentium 3. No it does not depend on RAM.
You might want to wait until the Core 2 processors come out. Then you might need a new motherboard and memory.

If you got the cash! buy a P4! and some RAM! and buy one of those 15K RPM HDD! that will make it super fast! but it will be super hot! ATA 150 is good! or SATA 3.0 GB is even better! It will boot up less than 10 second! trust me!

Get a new motherboard, RAM. CPU, HDD, Case, Power supply. You can actually get upgrade kits that come with all of the before mentioned! Have a look on the net you'll find some.

It just means its a different processor, a better processor you will be able to do more things, RAM has nothing to do with processors. Although RAM will speed up things considerably.
