I think it is born.

Though there are people who do it for fashion-really-, or insecurity, or because they don't find what they want, so they try wherever possible...

I think that they are both born and made. I mean the argument by most religious people is that God would never create a gay or lesbian person but I think that the there are just some people who are born that way and cant do anything about it. I mean really why would you CHOSE to be gay and have to deal with all the hate and anger and conflict that goes along with it. That would be like saying people are not born a certain race they chose it after they are born. Some people are born gay and others chose to be that way because of pressure or experiments or whatever other reasons.

Some homosexuals do find that there were factors of abuse or bad family relationships which contributed to their finding MSS attractive, and not finding MOS attractive (these are two separate issues - some people are attracted to both sexes).

On the other hand, some don't find any such factors influencing the nature of their desires, so that the desires may be present for no apparent reason - not even even any conscious choice on the person's part.

I think the jury is still out whether this has any actual physiological or genetic basis.

Yes, there have been a few studies suggesting this. However, I have a big problem with them: as far as I can see, they have not controlled for whether the physiological phenomena found in homosexuals were the result of homosexuality, the cause of homosexuality, or the result of some other factor (e.g. having died of AIDS).

So I think we should stop short of claiming that anyone was born like that, although at the same time, if one has such desires, one should indeed assume that they probably will not 'just go away', particularly if they persist beyond one's teenage years.

On the other hand, the major religions of the world do teach that we have a choice about what we do with those desires, and that our choice should be to refrain from acting on them(1). So there are two questions then:

1) Is it possible to acquire the ability to be attracted to members of the opposite sex if one does not already have it?

And the experience of religious people committed to refraining from homosexuality shows that often it is. But acquiring this ability cannot be the aim. It is a gift from God which will be given (or not - because some people are called to be celibate, in which case they don't *need* to be attracted to anyone at all!), at the time of His choosing.

Here is a list of links where you can find, among other things, testimonies of people who made 'the big move':

http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/rossuk/h-exgay.htm

Not to mention I know some such people personally.

2) What if that doesn't happen? Or alternatively, what to do about the desires that are still there?

In order to live successfully without acting on your desires, you have to be *really* convinced that it's the right thing to do, it has to arise out of your relationship with God.

You need to realize that lust is not ultimately a sexual sin - it is simply a form of greed (short for 'idolatry').(2) So that the thing to do is occupy yourself with actively choosing to do the opposite: worship God - above all, by offering your body to Him as a living sacrifice(3) - as well as glorify Him and give thanks to Him(4).

And yes, if you do all this, you end up with either the ability to be married to an MOS; or with a beautiful life where you love everyone equally without lusting after anyone. Not a bad deal, I would say!

In other words, a person may not have chosen homosexual desires, they may not go away, so in that sense, they are a sort of 'given' whose nature is not yet precisely known; but the question of whether one actually acts on them is one of choice. So in that sense, people make themselves homosexual.

Definitely born. I grew up as a military brat which is not an environment for the making of a gay person. No one wishes for this but has to learn to live with it and everything that comes with it.

Both! Some people have an unnatural leaning toward certain behavior that is inborn.(It is due to imperfection) Others are "turned out", that is, someone deliberately entices or seduces them into this type of behavior and they begin to prefer it.
