I don't jhave a homemade solution, but what works for me is a detailers clay bar. I use it on my car once a year to get all the grit and such out of my paint that washing and waxing cant remove. I tried it on my windshield after trying to remove stickers and that aweful greasepencil they attack your windshield with at a dealer. I tried alchohol, WD 40 and all of that, none of it worked.
The clay bar was awesome, you have to keep it and the surface you are using it on moist at all times though. I used a mixture of vineagar/water in a spray bottle. Sprayed both the bar and the area on the windshielf. Then flattened the clay out and used light to medium pressure to remove the stickies. You just rub it back and forth over the area until its all gone. You can hear and feel the contaminates being taken off and absorbed into the clay.
Check your clay often, if it is getting full of grit and ickies, fold it over until a clean side is shown. Remeber, keep spraying the area/clay to prevent scratching.
When all done, clean the entire windshield with vinegar spray and a clean, soft towel.
You can purchase a clay bar in a kit at autozone or kragen, but it comes in a set with other items such as a detailing spray for a lubricant as clay is mainly used for cleaning paint finishes on cars.

Try using baby oil. I worked in a resale shop and that is what we used to remove stickers. Apply the oil and let it sit for a couple of minuets, then scrape it off. There may still be some glue left, if there is reapply the baby oil and that will remove the glue.

Goo-Gone. I use it for everything. Takes all the sticky residue off of most surfaces. Sometimes alcohol and other products will damage the finish of some surfaces.

Lighter fluid or nail polish remover will take the glue off easily in most cases.

You can try ammonia, it pretty well cuts anything, if that don't work just get a bottle of Goo Gone at your local hardware or Walmart, works like a charm.
