If you hover your cursor over the Network/Internet/Broadband icon (bottom right of screen), you'll see the connection speed. Or go into Control Panel and open Network Connections then the type of connection you have.

Go to http://www.2wire.com/ and click the speed meter. It is free and checks the bandwidth between your computer and their server.
