Hi
I have a job which keeps me away from home a lot. Recently i had to spend 9 months in America. A few weeks before i got back my wife rang said that she was pregnant. This obviously blew me away. I cant believe she left it so long to tell me. Anyway, as i'd been away for nearly 9 months i jumped straight on a plane and left my assignement early as the baby would be born any time soon. When i got back my wife was big but not massive. However ive been back for 8 or 9 weeks and the babies still not been born. This is approaching 11 months or so now since we last had sex and conceived. I've been very worried and would have thought the doctors would have induced her by now. Apparently the doctors told my wife though that in very rare cases the child develops very slowly and the pregnancy is extended. She thinks to could be as much as 13 months. As i've been working a lot my brother has been going to the doctors with her and has confirmed this. Has anyone experienced this themselves?

I'm sorry but alarm bells would be ringing in my head here. Your BROTHER has been going to the doctor with her. Does she not have a mum or sister or other friend? Sounds very fishy to me, I'm sorry. I think you may want to do a DNA test once the baby is born.

Oh dear.

No baby stays in the womb for more than 42 weeks. The doctors get it out as it becomes too big to move and prone to infection after this time. It can also endanger the mothers life.

I think you know the answer to this one. A pregnancy lasts 40 weeks or 9 months from the last menstrual period .

WAKE UP AND SMELL THE COFFEE ! and perhaps ask why your brother has been hanging around with her so much?

Sorry to be harsh, but I think you need it.

im five months pregnant with my third child.

the absolute longest that you are allowed to go overdue is 3 weeks - and this is only in special circumstances, my friend had to wait three weeks but that was because her mother unfortunately died and she had to arrange the funeral. normally doctors allow you to wait two weeks and no longer before inducing.

there are normally two scans that pregnant women are given, to asses the size and development of the baby. she should have had these and they would have picked up on any problems with the baby developing in size.

im really sorry but there is no chance that a baby would be allowed to develop inside it's mother for 13 months. i would strongly recommend that you have a talk with your wife and if you feel the need then a DNA test once the baby is born, then would recommend it. a woman is pregnant for 40 weeks on average -but they allow two weeks grace either way, but never as long as you are describing. he pregnancy notes should have details of when she is due the baby, and the date of her last period.

i hope that you arrive at the answer you wish for, but i would be extremely surprised if the baby is genetucally yours.

whatever you decide to do, i would question why she left it so long to tell you, i could not wait to tell my partner, and if your brother was with her why did he not tell you. on top of this most women, if their partner was not availiable, would either attend classes on their own or would take a friend or relative, i took my sister as my man works quite far away, but he did attend the scans as i felt it was important we share the pregnancy. i might also suggest that you make an appointment with your own doctor to discuss your concerns, as he would be able to dicuss this on more depth, and they are not allowed to tell your wife without your permission.

my thoughts are with you.

My sisters boyfriend was apparatly born after an 11 week pregnancy in rural Italy. However I can assure you that in the West, doctors would have the baby outa there by 42 weeks.

there are a few RARE cases where a pregnancy is prolonged, HOWEVER: not that long. the safety of the fetus lessens after 41 weeks - you are now at around 44.
Management of prolonged pregnancy in the absence of other complications is controversial. The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists’ guidelines recommend that women should be offered induction after 41 weeks. From 42 weeks, women who decline induction should be offered increased antenatal monitoring consisting of twice-weekly cardiotocography and ultrasound estimation of maximum amniotic pool depth. 1 If expectant management is chosen it is recommended that labour should be induced at the beginning of the 43rd week."

Sounds wonderful I am sure but doctors will as a matter of course induce labour after 42 weeks. Since it isn't April I will treat this as a real question. Has your brother been spending a lot of time with her while you were away?

like they say nothing last forever and after 40 weeks the placenta which feeds the baby etc, dosent work as effently, there is no way on this planet the doctors would leave her this long. babies are born prem with low birth weights so being born full term and small is fine. SHE IS LIEING TO YOU. take her to the doctors and tell your brother to get lost.(dont be that polite).

I think that you better go to the doctors with your wife not your brother. You will know then if she is telling the truth you will have to hear it from the doc's mouth sounds a bit fishy to me good luck i hope it all turns out ok xx
