To fix this problem please open outlook express and then do the following


select tools
accounts
make sure the mail tab is selected
click on properties (assuming you have only one mail account)
click on servers
ensure that there is a tick in the box next to my server requires authentication
click on settings and make sure that their is a dot next to use same settings as my incoming mail server
click ok
click apply and then
ok
