All that you've written about him show that he is NOT a true friend at all. Talk to him. Tell him what you don't like about him. See if he changes. If he doesn't, leave him. He is not the only guy you can be friends with!
Get more friends. Don't be dependant upon one person for friendship. Hang out with your other friends, and see if he complains. He may not want to be your friend, for all you know!
Try to be as formal with him as he is with you. This may bring him on the right track. If it doesn't, dump him for good.
If you don't want to feel the need for companionship, you're very much like me. I used to enjoy with my friends, but they had their own groups and after some time, they used to make their separate groups and leave me alone. It irked me in the beginning, but I got used to it. Just because I didn't complain then, they came to talk to me themselves. So, I've got a great best friend now.
Don't get stuck with that so called friend of yours. Get new friends, get a new life!!
Good Luck!

If you were truly friends with the guy, then you wouldn't be so irritated by him.
Friendship is quite an interesting aspect of our lives. Experts tell us that we'll live longer if we have friends.
I seriously reflected upon my friends the other day because one of my friends said something unkind about my closest friend. Then it dawned on me - I don't even notice my friend's flaws. I guess we're true friends (combined with the fact that I do anything for him).
So, if you continue to be friends with this person and if you continue to be this critical, I'd predict it won't last.

It sounds like he may be a needy person. Your friendship and kindness to him may be the only ones he receives from anyone, so when he starts to "relax" around you and becomes suspicious, he's aware of how you respond and he reverts back to being nice and friendly.

he is a manipulator. You should call him on every thing he does so that he knows what he's doing wrong. You may be better off not dealing with him because it is hard for them to change from manipulating others

it sounds like he's not really your friend- friends don't make you feel bad. Open up to some new people and stop being controlled by him
