I worked for this company who went out of their way not to promote anyone within the store. It was always someone else just getting hired for the managerial positions, and on top of that we had to train them to be able to do their jobs.

Maybe when you ask for it, your employer may not be aware that you are interested in advancing, believe it or not some times employers can overlook good employees and they need to be shown or convinced that you are an asset to the company and they need you.
