Do you mean the wall plates/switches that turn on room lights? For those, unscrew them and remove the wall plate. You can soak that in a bowl with dish soap. For the switch, use a cotton q-tip dipped in cleanser like mr. clean. Just do not touch the wires! If the wall plates are old and out of date, you can easily buy new ones (in white or with fancy designs).

For switches on appliances like a blender, q-tips work good, or an old, soft, toothbrush. Just go easy on the water, and unplug the thing first.

If you can unplug whatever item it is you want to clean, that's the safest thing. Wait until the item is totally dry before plugging it back in.

Turn the power to that switch off, and spray it with Windex, then use an old toothbrush. You can always just replace them, they only cost about 39 cents at Home Depot or Lowes, and the covers are about 20 cents.

Use an old toothbrush, but do it this way: dip it into 409, dab it semi-dry on a rag, then scrub the lightswitch.
