Lol nice question.
Well once the male finds a female hedgehog, he will "sing" to her. It is usually a high sqeaky noise. The female will spike and huff at him, basically to scare him off and to play hard to get. If the male keeps on singing, the female will eventually give up and push her behind out, with her quills flat and tail pointing down. Then the male will mount the female, and their you go.

One she has chosen a mate the female hedgehog turns round to present herself and lies her spines flat down enabling the male to mount and mate. The common misunderstanding is that these spines are in a constant upright postion but they can be raised and flattened at will

With great care. :)
Nature always has logical solutions for her creatures. A look into a book on woodland mammals will answer your question in more detail.
