Basic Answer:
A server is a computer that hosts or serves web content/pages for the internet or any other network. It is left on and online so that your computer and everyone else's computers can access the information. For example, Yahoo Answers is a website being hosted on a server. When you click a link or type in the address, your computer is talking with that server and getting the web page from it. If you wanted to you could make your computer into a server.
