tricky one this as there are lots of closet recists out there, I myself never look at colour or race and see past that,

I remember where i worked before about 6 years ago and I had a temporary boss (who was a director waiting for his retirement to start) and he told me .......... "Do not employ black people!" this disturbed me and I was pleased when he left. I did have my rows with him on many occassions and I think the last one was when I showed him my two new recruits!

Its a difficult question to answer accurately as racism exists on many levels, not just the overt sort displayed by the far right. As mentioned before, some people persist with racist attitudes although perhaps in their mind they are not being racist. Then you have those who have a fear or dislike of, for example, blacks or Asians as a result of popular myths such as a tendency to criminal activities or preferential treatment by the authorities. There is much covert racism such as when you hear people claiming that this country cannot support immigrants when they really mean black or Asian immigrants.
With all this in mind I have to conclude that racism is widespread.

You get the older generations being more racist because they remember when there was mostly white people and they're ignorant. I don't think there is a cause except people like to pick on what is different to themselves...even superficial differences. I'm at university and black, white, blue...most younger people where i come from couldn't care less - ive only ever seen 1 episode of violent racism but it was towards a white girl, not a black person :)

Not as bad as you'd think from reading the news. Racism has been steadily disappearing for years - not because of the worthy attempts by the authorities to promote 'inclusion', but because over time people stop seeing black people as aliens and targets of prejudice.

The media try to blow things out of proportion for a good story, and the authorities are so desperate not to be seen as institutionally racist that they go to extraordinary efforts to prove it. We now have a law that makes a racially motivated assault worse than a simple assault. In other words, what the assailant was thinking at the time of the attack is a crime in itself. Affording ethnic minorities this kind of victim status is not only patronising and emphasises their 'difference', but it makes the situation seem worse than it is.

Hopefully, one day we will have a country where we are colour blind - where everyone is treated equally under the law, regardless of their colour. The biggest obstacle for us achieving this aim isn't morons like the BNP - they would be non-entities if it wasn't for the media trying to whip up hysteria about them. The real problem is people banging on about racism to show how virtuous they are. You can't stop people being racist by criminalising them.

Depends where you live mate. Round my way things seem to be quiet regarding racism. I'm sure there are a few individuals who have outdated opinions on the subject but I never heard of anyone being attacked or abused because of the colour of their skin where I live. As for the causes - groundless fear and old fasioned ignorance I think.

On the whole like has been said many British people do not have a problem it is again only a minority which is a shame. I cannot stand racists and will give anyone who displays racism a piece of my mind. I once had some ar*e of a bloke hand me a leaflet on the BNP i ripped it up in front of him and told HIM in no uncertain terms what i thought of him and his sh*t he trys and spreads around.

depends where you go, on the whole the vast majority of brittish people are a tollerent society that values the diversity that multi-culturalism brings.

on the other hand there is a pocket of ignorant and overtly racist people such as the BNP who see anything different to themselves as a threat, these nutters bear no resemblance to the real british people who embrace all with open arms

Personally I find more positive discrimination than negative. And it would appear that now the ethnic miniorities are more negative about other races than the indigenous population.

Most racism comes from the poverty line, and unwillingness to take personal responsiblity.

I lived in London for 2 years and I seen much racism. 98% of it was caused by blacks. Ok, maybe they didn't serve me in bars and what not as the blacks may have got drunk and killed me- it was a tough neighbourhood- but still blacks commited the majority of it.

And I'm not blaming the comman blacks; heck, I know it can be hard to claw your way out of crack-coccaine and heroin addiction.
