To find an asteroid two consecutive images of the same region of the sky in which an asteroid was assumed to be located are photographed through a telescope. The images are then processed for clarity, and then stacked, which will allow them to be animated, or flipped back and forth between them, creating an illusion of movement, or animation. This process is what we call blinking, as the images are alternately blinked on the screen.

When the images are properly registered, or lined up one on top of the other, the objects in them that have not moved appear in the same places on the computer screen, these are stars. The object that have moved are asteroids.

Asteroids are lumps of rock that orbit our sun, most of them are concentrated in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.
Stars are huge masses of hot hydrogen gas, producing vast ammounts of energy via nuclear fusion every second and radiating heat, light and various other kinds of electro-magnetic and partcicle radiation.
It's kinnda hard to get them mixed up. If you meant in the night sky then asteroids would not be visible without a good telescope. As for "shooting stars" they are caused by debrie much samller then an asteroid penetrating our atmosphere. They only appear for very short periods before burning out, and can usually be seen in motion.

an asteroid is a planetary debris, usually just a huge rock, flooating in space. A star is a gargantuan ball of burning gases that emits light and heat and usually has a tremendously strong gravitational pull compared to that of a lame asteroid.

Well when observing an asteroid, it will have an apparent motion. The only motion you'll observe from a star is it's east to west progression as the earth rotates.
