A constitution is supposed to be a written body of laws which supercede the authority of a government. This means that if the ruler or ruling party wishes to do something unconstitutional, it would be illegal and they would need to alter the constitution before they could do it. Which usually means getting a supermajority or a popular referendum, therefore the government would have a difficult time countermanding the body of laws.
A constitution is not so much a body of laws intended for the people. These are laws intended to define the role of government, and define which rights and privileges the people have ceded to the government. Such as the right to tax the people, it is a right reserved for the people to decide for themselves if they want to be taxed or not. The government cannot force a tax on citizens without thier consent.
A constitution in any country guarantees the sovereignty of the people over the government, and allows the government certain managerial and judicial authority over the people, which can be countermanded by amending the constitution. Typically, a government acting outside of the laws of a constitution is a dictatorship, because then the government itself is unlawful.
Constitution guarantees private rights, legal protections from the government, and sets boundaries for the governing authority. Any nation without a constitution, democracy or monarchy, is still a dictatorship. For example, if a Nazi party came to power, it would circumvent the rights of people in that nation to property, privacy, and basic human rights. Even though elected by a majority, the Nazi party acted without the confines of a constitution to set limits on what it could and could not do with the authority it had been granted by the people. Therefore, the majority was violating the rights of the minority, and those not in power.
A constitution prevents a king, senate, or ruling class from acting without restraint to govern it's people. Without it, the government can pass a law declaring you to be an enemy of the state, and legally cut your head off and steal your possessions.
Constitutional law is neccessary to prevent the government from becomming a dictatorship, yet retain leadership and judicial responsibilities, and guarantees the rights of citizens over the government.

The traditional (since Reagan) coalition between the GOP and the Religious Right is breaking down. Most Republican candidates are shying away from the Christian Right because they see that it hurts them more than helps them. I think Christians, also, are realizing that the real agenda of the GOP has nothing to do with 'values', that their real god is Mammon. This has given Mike Huckabee an opportunity to carve out a niche for himself as The Christian Candidate, even though his version of Christianity is not exactly the same as that of the Christian Right. When it comes to actual Christian values, Huckabee is something of a liberal. As Jesus was. Well then we come to South Carolina, a state where it's impossible to be too religious or too far to the right. All the other candidates are throwing red meat to the rednecks--they would increase torture, double the population of Guantanamo, make Muslims wear a little patch showing who they are, stuff like that. So Huckabee sees the opportunity to pander to Christians. Ronald Reagan, running for president in 1980, promised to propose a constitutional amendment, no less, to ban abortion. But he never even tried! It's not easy to amend the Constitution. It certainly isn't something a president can do by himself. Huckabee knows that, of course, but the Christians of South Carolina don't. 'Cos it ain't in the Bible. 'N' if it ain't in the Bible, it ain't worth known'.

A Constitution is a political foundation...it is the main infrastructure of a society that sets out what is legal in contrast to that which is not...every country should have their list of rules with checks and balances..
