I believe one steady sector is the accounting/auditing profession. Every company needs an accountant regardless of the state of the economy. Admin people are the first to get kicked out in a recession but accountants are pretty much indispensable. Also, given the recent spate of corporate scandals, the auditing profession now demands more auditors than ever to cater to changing rules and regulations.

The medical profession is and always will be recession proof. People will always get sick! Preventative medicine is a ongoing work in progress as well.

I would suggest Biotechnology Research Industry. It is important to keep updating yourself to maintain competitive in this industry.
