US leaderships over the decades seemed out of synch with reality without a vision as to how best to shape a positive world for its own citizens. That said I would also include the leaderships of Western European countries in the same basket of "political backwardness" worshipping the same altar of democratic freedom. But because of their collective political power and economic strength the Christian West influence and shape the world the way they want it to be. Changing this traditional thinking and governmental systems are virtually impossible because they have been deeply entrenched.
It is said that the Democrats can win only if the Republicans shoot themselves (lol). And the Republicans are working hard to shoot themselves right now. Personally I feel the political discussion in the United States right now is very backward. There is still no widespread political recognition of the conversion to the knowledge-based economy. They are still using political ideologies traceable back to the 1930s. With this 'traditional wisdom' of political leaderships, everything about American society is inculcated with exactly the same values that the leaderships proclaim.
America is one step ahead of technologically-backward Europe but together, I can't see them leading the world into a bright new tomorrow. It's a great pity because like you, I too believe America is still a great country.

Death Penalty; How would you rather deal with Ted Bundy or other serial killers. Can't keep them in jail according to your logic because that would create a higher prison population.
Gun Control; Most crimes are not committed with guns were illegally obtained.
Idiot President; hmmm.... Iraq and Afganistan or Kosovo and Bosnia and somolia , and are we not still in Kosovo and Bosnia too?
Social Services; Get a job and take care of yourself, why does the government have to provide?
Unequal; Again get a job and make something of yourself. Bill gates, college drop out.
Warmongering; and North Korea and Iran are not?
Prison population; What would you rather do with them, put them in your backyard??
Pollution; Ever seem China or Russia?

I refer you to several of my previous answers about how it's ok, you loony lefties, we GET IT, you don't like George W Bush. You have been saying that for 6 years now, and you haven't come up with anything intelligent to back it up. It's always "bush is bad, bush is dumb, bush is evil, bush is a moron". You debate like a 5 year old.
Or perhaps like Mister Mackey.
"You see class, drugs are bad. Mmmk. You shouldn't do drugs. Alcohol is bad, mmmk. You shouldn't drink alcohol. Smoking's bad, you shouldn't smoke, mmmk. Bush is bad, you shouldn't vote for Bush... because Bush is bad. Bush is evil, mmmk. He's wrong, and he lies, and he's bad. Mmmk. He's bad because he's evil, and he's wrong because he's bad. You shouldn't vote Bush, mmmk. Bush is bad. Voting Bush is bad, mmmk?"
How wonderfully articulate.
By the way, your little list of problems with this country... uhhmm how do I put this delicately... all of these problems and thensome existed under Clinton. But Clinton was the greatest president of all time, right? After all, he was only slacking off and getting hummers on the sly, cheating on his wife, and lying to the American people and to a grand jury. Which, last time I checked, was a crime, mmmk?
But that's ok, because you kool-aid drinkers don't mind having a criminal for president as long as he's giving the thumbs up while he lies to you, and has a "D" next to his name.

"Backward" countries don't have people risking death by dehydration just to sneak into them. Iran has no illegal immigrant problem.
You forgot to whine about "Big business, maaaaaaaaaaaaaaan."
