Alien, of course. Other than the fact that the movie "Muppets from Space" was about GONZO finding out he was an alien, i think that's about the only way we know.

Well according to the Muppet Show as well as everything except Muppets from Space, he is a "whatever" If you watch and listen to the movie Muppets from Space, he is an alien.
