The BBC produce absolutely wonderful programs which they would not be able to make if they were just another commerical station.
Because the BBC are funded through license fees rather than adverts they can concentrate on making innovative and interesting programs rather than just focussing on the pursuit of ratings as ITV etc do.
And because ITV etc have to chase ratings it means that they produce the same old crap time after time with nothing edgy or interesting. They never take risks because they're afraid of losing advertising dollars.
If the BBC was funded by adverts we would never have had Planet Earth or The Office or a million other interesting and thought-provoking programs over past decades.
For the kind of service the BBC provides, can you really complain at £130 a year or whatever it is...
I'd just like to add that I completely agree with pen-peg (the next post), but his sums are wrong. It isn't £13 a month. It's less than £11 a month.
Just think how much money you throw away on beer, wine, hobbies or whatever else you do for fun. Can you really complain at £11 a month for 24 hour a day TV and radio and one of the best web sites in the world.
You can even watch the World Cup, the 6 Nations, the Snooker World Championship, Wimbledon and God knows what other sports on the BBC web site. It's an incredible service!

I don't agree - there are things that the BBC does that just wouldn't be possible if it wasn't funded the way it is. If you look at the standard of TV in places where they have no publicly funded channel you just end up with vast amounts of crap, and just a few good bits (if you watch TV in the States there are hundreds of channels, very few of which you would want to watch - we have ALL their good stuff here, and when you try and watch the good stuff over there you cant enjoy it because there are ads roughly every 10 mins).
Also, the channels that currently compete for advertising revenue are already finding it difficult - if the BBC channels were to be competing for that advertising too then there just wouldn't be enough money to go round and the standard of all TV would drop - amazing programmes are very expensive to make, and if you add too many channels competing for the same limited pool of money then you end up with rubbish TV.
The TV Licence is £131.50 per year, which is only just over £13 per month - how favourably does that compare to the cheapest satellite or cable packages (where there is some choice of channels I know, but there are still some they make you take)?
Also, your licence fee doesn't just fund the TV channels - think of all the ad free radio, and the fantastic website - bbc.co.uk is regularly voted or cited as one of the best websites in the world, and is considered by many as unsurpassed for its news coverage.
I can understand the knee-jerk reaction of not wanting to be made to pay a licence fee - but before putting your name to a petition, have a really good think about what the BBC (which belongs to you) is really worth.
OK - rant over - sorry it was so long, I just feel passionately about this.

Yes we need the licence for the reasons already given. The licence also funds BBC radio and Radio 4 is the best station in the World bar none - totally unique.
On top of this the campaign seems to be run by Jonathan Miller, a Rupert Murdoch toady who has devoted a lot of his career writing toadying articles in Murdoch owned papers. Abolishing the licence means you might as well hand the whole of broadcasting over to Murdoch and Sky. If you think this is a good idea you can't have ever seen Fox News in the US.

No, I don't think we should pay a TV licence fee to the BBC BUT I wouldn't want adverts every 5 to 10 minutes like you see on the other channels. You can start watching a film and, before the opening titles have finished, you can guarantee there will be an advert break! I know they need the advertisers to recoup their costs but they could, at least, restrict them to every half hour and even have a longer ad break at the end of programmes.
I will sign the petition.

For the rubbish they put on NO we should not have to pay for a TV licence. Its about time the BBC came into the 21st Century and started advertising.

I do think the TV license should be abolished as most of the programmes are rubbish. Also most of the channels including BBC are having phone in`s at premium rates to raise money they could use this to finance.

The people who complain about paying TV licenses, if you dont pay can you imagine what sort of rubbish will be on. I think everybody should have a freeview box and pay a subscription. If you dont pay you dont get. It should work like sky and cable. Since when is it a right to have TV. It is a luxury. THink of all those countries out there that dont have anything. You should be grateful.

abolish the tv license and have dull ad breaks like on all the other channels. i find the lack of badly dubbed adverts for air fresheners fantastic. if you get ad breaks onto the bbc, i shall be throwing my television out of the window
