Anyone who even remotely suspects that IE is a better product has failed to take the time to get to know the product. In fact, the only thing IE does better is ActiveX, and that's because nobody else dares support a technology that insecure out of the box...
Between Tabbed Browsing, Popup blocking, and a far superior rendering engine (IE's is badly outdated, and seriously lacking in the CSS and W3C compliance departments), Firefox is runaway a much better browser, with far more flexibility and support for the average user than MS has ever provided for IE.
Microsoft has already lost the technology battle - now the question is, can the Mozilla Organization capitalize on that before Microsoft realizes it and gets 1,000 employees doing a hardcore rewrite to make IE what it should have been in the first place... then again, if MS fixes IE, the Mozilla foundation's mission is accomplished as well.

well we all see that some pages are incompatible with Firefox, but it is also widely known that there are some other pages that is incompatible with IE either, and some extremist may intentionally create pages that is only viewable in IE or only viewable in Firefox, and if not viewed in the appropriate browser, the page would look outrageously horrible.
But it is also known that IE have more standard violations, in which means, if a page is written to fit into the W3C standard (an official organization that has responsibilites in defining standard for HTML, CSS, XHTML, XML, and many others (http://www.w3c.org/ ) ) it would more likely to look better in Firefox than into IE.
But we all know that most web designer targets IE because IE is factually the most widely used browser in the current market, if only the write a page to fit into w3c's standard and not into a specific browser, the page would more likely look better in Firefox.
That is in compatibility.
In security, well it is needless to say that IE is an unlockable door for internet threats. People in Microsoft has made themself busy by trying to fix IE bugs that pops out every week, while they actually should make a new product. The biggest "bugs" in IE (which caused most of IE's most malicious bugs) is caused because IE is implemented so deeply into Windows core and thus is easier to have bugs (so deep that it is almost impossible to uninstall IE from a system without making Windows gone crazy or highly unstable). This is some kind of unfixable bugs (I could actually say that IE itself is a bug).
Firefox is not completely secure either though. And there is no browser that is completely secure, but Firefox IS more secure. Firefox doesn't support ActiveX, but tell me, what website do use ActiveX without actually being malicious in some way? To date, I've never seen any except Microsoft's own homepage, and only in the Windows Update page. And this slight advantage of supporting ActiveX is nilled by the security threats for supporting it. ActiveX in browser is really an invitation for virus and such (although in general, non-browser programming, ActiveX is a great helper.)
In conclusion. IE do have more compatibility, with its own standard, while Firefox have more compatibility to W3C's standard.
IE do support ActiveX, but we all know that supporting ActiveX have more disadvantages compared to supporting it. And we all know that there is almost no site that uses ActiveX, that is not malicious.

Hard to answer since I have a bias for Firefox. Anyway, here's what I think.
You'd use an internet browser because its easy and INTUITIVE enough to use i.e. tab browsing, easy to manage bookmarks, extendable functions etc. and IT SHOULD BE SECURE. It should be free from hijacks, trojans, phishing... you name it. Internet Explorer's SURVIVAL Rate without any antivirus and antispyware in the net is 9 minutes. After 9 minutes you're infected.
Internet Explorer is intuitive and easy to use but IT'S NOT SECURE! Hence:. I use Firefox. This is what Internet Explorer 7 is supposed to address.

Firefox is lauded by fans for its download speed and a superior user interface, and users say that its pop-up blocker is one of the best out there. It offers tabbed browsing, which means that users can jump back and forth between different sites with only one window open, and live bookmarks, which show users the most recent headlines on their favorite sites and lets them go directly to those articles.
But the biggest challenge facing anyone who wants to take on IE is that most Web sites are built to work best with Microsoft's IE simply because it's what sits on most PCs. That means some sites may not look quite right or may not be accessible at all via a browser other than IE.

Firefox is best, it is way more secure. IE is an open invitation for snoopers and malicious code.
More sites are built with IE in mind, but almost all are Firefox compatible now.
Also Firefox is continually being updated with cool new features, depending on what people want, but IE is just a big stale browser, and you have to take what they give you.
