It could be one of many issues.

I would strongly recommend that he seek counseling to find out the reasons behind his emotions and struggles.. and be transferred to a Psychiatrist for medication if necessary..

It could be a physical disorder.. amazingly, there are hormone imbalances that can cause such symptoms as well.. He would benefit from having a physical and blood testing.

It could also, unfortunately, be drugs.. counseling would be very useful in this case as well.

I have been diagnosed with BPD for 14 years. It is a daily struggle for myself, and my family. From years of researching, many say that it is an incurable disease.. although there are absolutely ways of being able to cope more appropriately with issues.

I hope you are both able to put a name to the problems.. and are able to work through them to maintain a relationship.

*hugs* You're not alone.

Edited to add: Nobody here is able to give you the proper diagnoses. Without a full physical/mental examination by a physician... none of us can certainly call it one thing or another, just give opinions.
