there are three sections essay,quantitative and verbal section? how do the marks get divided among them?

The verbal and quantitative scores are indeed weighted equally. The essay does not count towards the total 800 points available, but it does receive its own rating.

However, while business schools take into account the entire score, they put more weight on the quantitative section. The verbal and quantitative sections receive their own separate scores which admissions committees do see. These separate scores are often more important than the total score.

The essay score has no bearing at all on the "total" score.
I believe the quantitative and verbal scores are weighted approximately equally, but as far as I know the GMAT does not reveal their exact formula for the total score.
