Is increasing virtual memory to maximum possible advisable?If not why?

i know that virtual memory comes to help when we have a low RAM..but why we can change it...why not having it fixed..to the max possible?

well...let's have a look on how this works:
(very simplified)
virtual memory is a means of page switching, it switches a memory page with a page of the same size on the harddrive,thus the aparent memory is 2 times the size of the memory page.if the system needs data from the page on the harddrive ,the page will be switched back.

Actually there are many pages used, of small sizes.on the harddrive there are stored in one single file,being delimitated by their size only.
so...now imagine you have 1Gb of ram, and your computer is only used for basic things.....wouldn't be a waste of space to have a 10Gb virtual memory?
and another thing...seeking in a small file is faster than in an extremely large file,so.....use a fair amount of space for virtual memory....not the max available as it it's pointless.

I agree putting the swap file (virtual memory) onto another drive will increase your performance if you have another drive. Really the best way to increase performance is to increase your system RAM to minimum 512 meg and to really gain a boost 1 gigabyte. Ram is cheap so that's the best option. Good luck!

Increasing paging memory to the max will help windows, but will slow down other applications.

Your best bet is having ure pagefile moved to another drive and then setting it to 1024 min and 1024 max, so it wont fragment the other drive and improve ure pc performance.
