Yeah, I get this a few times too, I'm just patient and try again after a few seconds, it'll work eventually.

Yup.

When I try to stop a removable drive (say in a USB port) so that I can unplug it, but I haven't noticed that some other application is trying to write to the drive, or has a file open on the drive, I get that message.

Cure is to find the app that is busy with the drive, and close it (completely if necessary - note that when you close a file in Word but leave Word open, it still has its own housekeeping file open in the same place as the first file you opened). Once it's closed, stop the drive normally and unplug it.

Don't just pull the damn drive out. That will hurt your data.
