I remember it well. It sounds like you have the answer you need. He was a super fantastic guitar player. Great! The music world had many losses near that same time, Johnny Van Zant of Lynyrd Skynyrd ,singer/songwriter Steve Gaines, vocalist Cassie Gaines, also were killed. The entire group with the exception of Drummer Artimus Pyle who crawled out of the plane wreckage and got help died. A chartered airplane carrying the band between shows from Greenville, South Carolina to Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana crashed near a forest in McComb, Mississippi. The plane had been having engine trouble before leaving Greenville and literally ran out of gas. I had the pleasure of being at their last concert. I never got to see Stevie Ray however, although he often appeared with Lynyrd Skynyrd. How ironic is that?

If I'm not mistaken, Eric Clapton played Vaughn's last show and was supposed to have been on the same helicopter. He gave up his seat to a member of the crew who had a family emergency and that crew member was killed along with Vaughn. Austin's 6th street will never be the same.
