To tell you the truth, I never let my child believe in santa, the tooth fairy, easter bunny or anything. He is five years old, and he is mature for his age. I want my son to know that although he may be lied to by the world, he will never be lied to by his parents.

"some imgaination doesn't hurt anybody"

it hurts, really hurts when they know the truth.

Anyway parents have reason to do that, kids are kids, they can't understand complicated stuff and philosophy. Santa Claus is an easy way to teach the kids that if they're good, nice, do good things, help other people, etc they'll be rewarded. At least we can keep the kids good and innocent for couple of years.

The scarry thing is how to do that, if parents completely lie to them every time, when they grow up and realize it's not true, they may be very angry and don't trust anything else, even the good ones.

So parents should balance on how much they should "lie" to their kids, don't use Santa Claus as the answers for all questions or for their requests. Don't spoil the kids by lying without thinking first.

Childhood needs imagination and magic, they will learn all to soon about harsh realities, to be able to believe that the good are rewarded the bad punished and that your wishes might come true is a priveledge of childhood and something that every child should be allowed to have, its our imagination that makes us who we are.

It teaches children about consequences... you do good, you get (maybe not all the time) want you want. You do bad things, you get a nice piece of coal. Positive action begets positive results, negative action begets negative results. Plus the sharing, the giving from the bottom of one's heart.
