the shortest day in a year is on 21st of december (in America)
due to the tilting of the earth which causes less light to hit the earth and more night at 4:30pm

In the northern hemisphere, the winter solstice (shortest day) usually falls on December 21/December 22. I think it's calculated by the amount of sunlight.
