While reality shows pretend to represent "real life" they are always set in situations where conflict and action are artificially stimulated. Also the footage is radically edited to present the most dramatic of the situations. Theatre essentially does the same thing. By putting characters in unusual situations and selecting the "scenes" that are presented there is compression of the dramatic action and what we might call exaggeration. Its primarily a matter of selection and organization of the action to let the audience integrate it and experience it as fully and "dramatically" as possible.

From what I can understand - the concept that you speak of is in relation to movies or live theater.

It means that if you want your film to be appealing, then the concepts must be exaggerated so as not to become boring to the viewer.

For instance, if I were to write a script about my life, I would extract all of the funniest, saddest and most dramatic parts of my life and I might even fabricate them a little. I would leave out all the long periods of time where nothing interesting occured. I would also disregard any part of my life that does not illustrate the mood that I wish to convey. If the mood was to be funny or comedic, then I would not drone on and on about the sadness in my life unless it was to have a humorous outcome.

I hope my example helps.
