you should have been asking why they form a chain
you see,each ant leaves a certain chemical which has an odour, and is easily picked by other ants. so these ants just follow the scent, and hence it looks like they form a chain

Ants will commonly use pheromones as a means of communicating with other ants in the colony. When an ant finds food, it will take some back to the colony. As it does so, it will drag it's abdomen along the ground and deposit a chemical marker. This leaves a trail the other ants can smell and follow to the food source. Each ant, in turn, does the same. Once the food has all been retrieved, the empty-handed ants stop depositing the chemical marker, which dissipates, erasing the trail.

This is because of a pheromone, a chemical scent, left behind by an ant at some point leading to food or whatever reason. The other ants will then follow this scent.

.... they are following a scent trail placed by the ant that returned with the food ... they then follow this trail back and forth to the food ... you'll notice that they are polite, in that they get out of each others way going back in forth .... unlike humans, we are in constant battle to be first ... especially the _uckin _iggers ... get the _uck in line and wait your turn you stupid _uckin _iggers !!!

Its just because they dont want to break away from their community. They live in groups and are a best example of living in a colony.
