In Latin America, and I believe in Europe too, people go back home at lunch time and after they have lunch they take a siesta. Usually lunch break lasts from one to two hours. They do sleep during the siesta. However, in many countries things have changed in the last few years because they have adopted the American working hours and fast pace.
My parents take a siesta from 1:30 to 4:00 p.m. every day! Well, they are retired...

I don´t think "Siesta" is sleeping - in the meaning that you lie in bed and actually sleep. It´s more "resting" - they stay somewhere in a cool place inside a house - because it´s too hot for working.

I don´t want to insult anybody but don´t you know the proverb:
"Only donkeys and Englishmen lie down in the sun at noon"
