When a cow
moos, it is communicating. While the languages that people use are
probably much more complex than the ones used by cows, their purpose
remains the same. As to the reasons that cows moo, I suppose a dairy farmer would be the best
person to ask. If you have time, try watching cows and see what is
happening when they moo. Is it time to eat? Is there another animal
approaching? Or do they just seem to be expressing themselves creatively?
Try it!

Well, I was there when it happened believe it or not. 'God' had called for all of the beings to report for voice assignment. The chickens got the 'cluck', the ducks - the 'quack', dogs - 'bark' and so on. Well when all of the voices had been issued it was noticed that their were two voices left 'Moo' and human. So, an angel was sent out among the creation of 'God' to find out where the two missing beings were. When the angel found them they were watching a pre-release of the 2006 championship game six of the NBA playoffs. The angel stood in front of the screen and told the two beings that they needed to report to receive their assigned voices. Neither wanted to move from the screen. So the angel grabbed the remote control and off it flew with the two beings in hot pursuit. The angel makes it back to the Voice Assignment Office with the first being on its wingtips. Bam! On site, it's assigned a voice automatically, as for the other being well it wasn't as nimble as the other so it got the last voice in the box. When asked how it felt about this voice assignment; it went, "Mooooooo!" The other being says, "Awwww - Man! That's messed up!" lol

Because they have the lips for it-----They tried clucking for awhile a couple of millenia back---but their tongues were too long for the roof of mouth contact and it came out more like UCKA---THEY DID A SURVEY AND THE LAZY COWS WON WITH THEIR ENTRY-- AT FIRST IT WAS ---MAOOOO---a few generations later--lazier cows yet were born--street lingo took over and that gave us what we know today as the MOO COW

Whenever an animal makes a sound it has to do two things. First it needs to make a vibration, and then it has to make it loud enough to be heard. Cows are mammals, like us and like sheep, and we all have flaps called vocal cords in our throats that we can vibrate to make a noise. We vibrate them by letting out a stream of air past them, from our lungs. We can make the sound higher or lower by stretching or relaxing the muscle. We can make the sound short or long by changing the "length" of the stream of air, and we can make the sound louder by speeding up the stream and by using our mouths to amplify the sound (like the body of a guitar makes its strings sound louder. Sooooo ..... the cow does all of these things, and the sound it makes depends on the shape of its vocal cords, the size of its lungs and the shape of its mouth - and also the sounds it learns from its parents as it grows up.

You can try an experiment .... blow up a balloon and stretch open the end as you let the air out - it makes a noise, just like the vocal cords. What happens to the sound if you stretch the end more?...less? Now get someone to cup their hands over the end as you do it. What happens to the loudness as they open and close them?

I hope this helps.
