This US Federal Site has a pre-screening tool to help decide if you qualify and other helpful links.

Check, not only with a Social Services Office, but other organizations such as Children and Family Services in your State. Each may have different criteria that may or may not make you eligible. So apply several places... Ask (maybe at churches) what offices make food stamp programs available.

It should not effect your future. It's a private matter. (If, in the off chance someone questions you about it, say you were working your way through college - and the help was appreciated.)

Good luck. Peace.

All you have to do is go to your nearest W-2 building an tell them you are homeless and fill out the food stamp form. It won't affect you in the future.
