I am 19 yr. old female who turning 20 in a couple of weeks. I have a really bad past. I used to drink alot, smoked all the time spend my money recklessly whatever it was I did it. When I was 18 I got a credit card that had a $200 limit and I have yet to pay it off... back then I didn't care... needless to say the principle and interest are sky high. Now that I'm trying clean up my life and be responsible... I have two jobs while going to school full time...I need help. I have to move out cause I can't live with mother any more, so I went with a friend to get an apartment. It is tax credit housing... I have money to pay rent but I'm not sure if they will approve. What can I do clean up the financial mess that I have made and make myself financially independent from my parents and financially stable and secure for the future? How do I clean up credit by the time I'm 22? Do you think the housing people will reject me?

You sound like you know what you are doing. Staying with a friend is great advice. It helps you get on your feet, you will be helping your friend with rent, and it's just nice to experience a roommate. I know what it feels like to feel overwhelmed with debt and financial problems, but you are not in financial trouble. Your conscious effort to pay off your existing debt is what separates you from the many other who get into more than they can chew. I know people who are working their way out of 80-100k of unsecured debt. Just keep on doing what you're doing and soon you will see how it pays off.

Two jobs with school full-time? Give yourself a break every now and then, first off. That's one of the most important things. Don't spend money to do it; just have some time for yourself, to reduce stress, so you *can* get this done by 22.

Keep up the good attitude, and you'll make it there quickly enough; you seem to be doing the right things. Don't buy anything you don't need (you don't need chocolate either, except occasionally; you don't need much more than bread & water & paid bills).

Pay exactly the amount that each bill requires or slightly more, and pay it one week early if possible.

Pick the credit card with the lowest amount of debt that you have, and pay the maximum amount you can afford on it, as often as possible, while still leaving money for the minimum payments on the other cards; this way, you can quickly knock out one card, and get some tangible results. This is a confidence-booster, so pick the lowest one, pay it off ASAP & then cut up the card. Move to the next.

If the housing people reject you, find another solution. There is always somewhere to live; just remeber to keep it simple, and keep it cheap. You were irresponsible for a fair amount of time; your punishment might be to live in somewhat of a shack for a while. Don't let this hurt your pride of course, if you don't like your situation. As long as your financial state is improving, you have very much to be proud of, and even more when you finish. Pay your bills, pay off your credit cards & cut 'em up as soon as you can, work and pay and work some more for good measure until your debt is gone. It's as simple as that. Hardest part is just keeping your spirit up, so don't let yourself get down.

you have two jobs, you should will pay off your credit card before you know it, just make sure you pay the credit card every month a least 50 dollars a month, and if you just rent a room from a family until you can get your own apartment you can save some money and get the apartment you want, don't go out for a while and pay off anyone you owe and concentrate on your job and school and keep in mind that you will come out of this but you must keep you head on your shoulders and don't spend more than you have to at least for now, Good Luck

you seem to be on the right track, keep it up!

Start clearing up your credit. Pay all your bills and keep them paid! Use your credit card for emergencies only! If you pay off your credit card it will help you get better credit. Don't get behind on any of your bills!!
Open up a savings account and promise your self to put a certain amount from every paycheck in the account. Don't touch the money unless you absolutely have to!! Start managing your money by making lists of bills and how much money you have left over. Good luck you are among the majority of people living in the "American dream" in DEBT!!!

First off, relax. Sounds to me like you were being a teen-ager. Take it easy and do a little research. Credit counseling is available. Try the phone book and ,..oh yeah, the net. But, most of all, don't panic. You're working AND going to school, so you're already taking positive steps. Just keep doin' what you're doin.
