it has to do with expected value. The expected value of -$100(.01) = -$1. Expected value of -$1.11(.9) = -$.999, so essentially it's the same expected loss of one dollar. But the concept of expected value only really makes sense over a repeated number of turns in the experiment. Of course if you do this one time, you are more likely to lose in the second game, but over time, the net outcomes will be around the same.
