Many people would reply by saying a minimum of eight hours of rest. But the answer doesn't depend solely on how many hours you log in bed. Night after night, you need deep uninterrupted sleep in a bed that provides adequate comfort support and space. What matters most of all is how you feel in the morning. If you wake up full of renewed energy, you've had a good night's sleep.
There is no one formula for how much sleep is enough for you. Expecting all people to need the same amount of rest would be as absurd as expecting them to eat the same amount of food every day. Each of us seems to have an innate sleep "appetite" that is as much a part of our genetic programming as hair color, height and skin tone. Normal sleep times range from five to ten hours; the average is 7 1/2. About one or two people in one hundred can get by with just five hours; another small minority needs twice that amount.
How much sleep is enough for you? To figure out your sleep needs, keep your wake-up time the same every morning and vary your bedtimes. Are you groggy after six hours of shut-eye? Does an extra hour give your more stamina? What about an extra two hours? Since too much time in bed can make some people feel sluggish, don't assume that more is always better. Listen to your body's signals and adjust your sleep schedule to suit them.
Keep in mind that sleep needs change with age. And the older you are, the less total sleep time you may need. A newborn may spend 18 hours asleep. From infancy to adulthood, sleep decreases by more than half. Throughout the middle decades of life, seven or eight hours of sleep generally are needed to provide adequate rest. For older individuals, six hours may suffice.

According to the National Institutes of Health, the average adult sleeps less than seven hours per night. In today’s fast-paced society, six or seven hours of sleep may sound pretty good. In reality, though, it’s a recipe for chronic sleep deprivation.

May be appropriate = 6-11
Adults (26-65):

Everybody's a little different, but the studies I've read seem to come up with numbers in the 7-8 hours per night range. Sleeping too little is obviously not good, and sleeping too much makes you feel all groggy the next day. You are asking this question for a reason... If it's too little sleep you're getting, try getting a little more. If it's too much, try dragging your carcass out of bed a little earlier, and you might just feel a lot better.

It depends on the person, some can function on 5 hours, others need 8-9. My husband has a hard labor job, 10 hours a day and some how functions on 7 hours sleep. When he doesn't work, he can function on 5. (He's almost 25)

Whatever it takes for you to feel refreshed and able to function effectively during the day. If you're healthy and don't take any medication, then I think 8 hours is about average but everyone is different, some people only need a few hours, others anything up to 10.
If you feel fine otherwise, and your sleeping patterns haven't changed dramatically (for example not being able to sleep at all, or sleeping for hours at night and then needing to sleep during the day as well) then I wouldn't worry about it.

An adult man/woman in their child -bearing years needs 4 sleep cycles every 24 hours.
A sleep cycle lasts approximately 90 minutes and consists of phases of dreamless and REM (Rapid Eye Movement ) sleep.
Usually , sleeping (without getting up) for about 6 -7 hours can give this required minimum .

You need to experiment! I feel best after 8 hours but if I get any more I feel tired all day, you can get too much sleep. Maggie thatcher used to get only 4 hours sleep a night! I dont know what that prooves though!
