Yeah it's humans, this is more of a metaphor.
4 Legs in the morning means the 4 limbs a baby crawls on (The "morning" meaning early years)
2 legs means adulthood, where we walk on our two legs (afternoon because it's the middle of our lives)
3 legs at night means elderlyness, because you walk on your two legs and cane to help stabilize you (at night because it's toward the end of your life)

Human.
Morning stands for the early lifetime which we walk with both our legs and arms. (2+2=4)
Afternoon is our middle lifetime when we had grown which we are able to walk by using only our legs.(2 legs)
Night is the later part of our life, when we are getting very old which we need a stick to help us walk on both our legs. (2+1=3)

humans, when we are babies we crawl on 4 legs, then we walk with two legs and when we are old we add a cane which makes up the third leg. So people is the answer.

guy. As a toddler, or in the "morning" of your existence, you move slowly on 4 legs, in the middle, you walk on 2 legs, and as an older human being, in the "evening " of existence, you walk via a cane, 3 legs. it quite is the sphynx's riddle, proper?
