Well, ask them what their parents wanted them to change about themselves. Ask them if they liked being critisize as young adults. They should be proud of you for who you are not what you wear. Life is too short to worry about your dress. Tell them it could be worse.

Unfortunately even in this day and age people judge you on your appearance.
Personally I quite like the look you are trying to achieve however to others it may come across as being a lazy wannabe who hangs around on street corners and causes trouble. They see films on the TV where gangs dress a certain way and believe this is always the case if you wear the same type of clothing.
I understand your parents concerns. They know the real you. They know and see the person beneath the clothes you wear and they know what you are capable of acheiving. Others just see the clothing and won't give you the time of day.

I don't think you will ever get your parents to like how you dress, but you may be able to reach some kind of compromise.
Maybe wear trousers that aren't quite so baggy or a shirt that actually fits once in a while.
It may go against all you stand for but sometimes we have to grow up a bit and see others' points of views too.

Good luck

Styles are a personal matter--a statement of who you are. You don't mention how your parents wish you to dress, but maybe your individuality is misplaced or a matter of poor timing. Are they trying to control the dress and everything else in your life? They may be exerting guidance on something that bothers them but haven't given you a reason that is adequate. They may worry that the style is dangerous if gang activity exists in your area. Maybe it's an identity thing ---They need to talk and treat you for the age that you are at . You need to be acting your age also. Maybe the reason is you are too old or too young for the style. There will come a time that the style will be an issue for the job market. You certainly do not want to be passed up for a job because of the clothes. How you dress when you are off is your business---but a boss is going to have an idea of how his employees will represent the company. By then you may change styles again. Keep getting the A grades---gangster clothes have nothing to do with it. Keep the faith and keep the peace.

Given the associations your mode of dress has, you'll get them to like the way you dress when you get them to like gangsters. In other words, never. It is a very good thing you get straight A's, and let me tell you, given the way you dress, your folks are going to pay a lot more attention to that (and other aspects of your lifestyle too) than they might otherwise, and they will probably be even stricter and have higher expectations from you than they might otherwise.

You might wish to think in more detail about exactly why you wish to dress this way (is it the comfort? the lack of fuss? the aesthetics?), and then see if there isn't an alternative way to satisfy those requirements that doesn't have gangsterish associations.

Or, you could choose one element of your present wardrobe, e.g. the big shirts, and wear 'normal' jeans (I think the other way around - baggy pants with a 'normal' T-shirt - might look a little more mismatched).

Or you could just tone down the 'bigness' of the whole wardrobe, and, if possible, style the hair on your face appropriately (You know, that thing where the face is clean-shaven except for a narrow, neatly cut border around the very edges? Maybe something like that.)

And regardless of the wardrobe solution you choose, I think it would be a good idea to pay attention to your hairstyle. Let it not be just 'hair hanging in strings, that weird length where people can't tell from looking if you're trying to grow it or just haven't been to the barber's lately'. Go for something reasonably sharp, perhaps without a lot of fuss - maybe a shortish style with a bit of gel to keep it out of your face might be the look for you, from what you say.

But whatever you do, make sure it looks neat, so you'll look sharp, not sloppy.

i wonder how old you are. My parents felt that way about my brothers but I think they grew out of it. My boyfriend is 28...and he still dresses like that, but Im hoping to change that. That style is starting to get old. and guys just look more attractive when their not putting that gangster face on all the time you know. Maybe you should tell your paretns that your clothes dont change the person you are inside. That is probably what they are thinking, because if you dress like a gangster people assume that you are a gangster...and thats not too much of a great impression. Just dont let other guys and the world teach you how to dress, be yourself and come up with your own style, just dont get too crazy.

Try to be yourself. Don't try to be something you aren't. Guilt by association is easy for a parent to see. If you look like a gangster, then you must be a gangster is what they think. Would you like your dad to sag his pants or mom to show off her thong?

Respect your parents' wishes while you still live with them. I mean really, when you move out you can dress any way you want. Can't you wait until then?
